The Best Metal Detector Brand

Choosing the best metal detector brand is like choosing the best automobile brand. There are many brands to choose from, and each brand has many models to choose from. Just as some people prefer Chevy or Ford, some detectorists prefer Garret, or Fisher, or another metal detector brand.

There is no single best metal detector brand, but there are some that have earned the status as being great brands. There are too many metal detector brands to cover all the brands you can choose from, but I will cover some of the most popular brands available. These are, in alphabetical order, Bounty Hunter, Fisher, Garrett, Minelab, Tesoro, and White’s.

Bounty Hunter

Bounty Hunter makes metal detectors ranging from $100 to $350. They specialize in inexpensive detectors. They won’t have all the features and capabilities of higher end detectors but are more affordable for a detectorist on a tight budget.

Fisher makes metal detectors ranging from $200 to $1150. Dr. Gerhard Fisher obtained the first patent ever issued for aircraft radio direction finders in the late 1920’s. He noticed that metal objects would cause errors, which lead to the creation of Fisher in 1931. They are known for making high quality detectors at all price levels.

Garrett makes metal detectors ranging from $150 to $1200. They make a variety of detectors and are known for having excellent quality, especially on entry to mid-level detectors. They are also well known for making security metal detectors like the ones you walk through at airports.

Minelab makes metal detectors ranging from $400 to $5900. They are the luxury brand of metal detectors. They focus on high quality detectors and so they tend to be more expensive. They make excellent quality mid-level to high end metal detectors.

Tesoro makes metal detectors ranging from $150 to $750. The founder had previously worked at both Fisher and Bounty Hunter and opened Tesoro in 1980. He named it Tesoro after the Spanish word for treasure. They are known for making quality entry level and mid-level metal detectors.

White’s makes metal detectors that have recommended retail prices of $600 to $1800. Like the other brands, you can buy the detectors for less than the MSRP, but unlike the other brands, they restrict dealers from advertising prices below this amount so you need to call or go to a local shop to get prices. White’s has been around since the 1950’s and are a popular brand for mid-level to high end detectors.
